Quick verdict

XPEL and SunTek both make premium 8-mil TPU paint protection film, and the head-to-head differences in optical clarity, self-healing, and durability are minimal. The real differentiator is the installer ecosystem: XPEL wins on dealer count and the DAP cutting software, while SunTek wins on warranty length (12 years vs 10) and is often the friendlier brand for independent installers because of Eastman's less restrictive dealer terms.

Technology

Both flagship films — XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS and SunTek Reaction — are manufactured from the same fundamental material: thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), the modern standard for PPF. TPU is what makes the film stretchable, optically clear, and self-healing. Both films are approximately 8 mil thick (203 microns), with a roughly 1.5-mil acrylic adhesive layer underneath and a clear-coat topcoat that lets minor scratches "heal" when warmed by sunlight or hot water.

XPEL is the larger of the two as a standalone brand and is publicly traded (NASDAQ: XPEL). SunTek is owned by Eastman Chemical, an industrial materials giant whose chemistry catalog underpins both PPF and architectural window film.

DAP vs PreCut

The single biggest practical difference between the two brands is the cutting software. XPEL's Design Access Program (DAP) is the most comprehensive plotter library in the industry — every Authorized XPEL Dealer has access to pre-cut templates for virtually every vehicle on the road, including most exotic and pre-production cars. DAP files are exclusive to XPEL dealers and cannot be used with competing plotters.

SunTek dealers either use Eastman's PreCut system or run third-party plotter libraries. The pattern coverage is excellent but slightly less comprehensive than DAP for the latest model years and exotic platforms.

For the average customer, DAP doesn't make XPEL film any better — but it does make it more likely that an XPEL installer can wrap your specific vehicle without any hand-trimming on the paint, which is the riskiest part of any install.

Warranty

XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS SunTek Reaction
Length 10 years 12 years
Transferable Once Once
Covers Yellowing, cracking, peeling, bubbling, delamination Yellowing, cracking, peeling, bubbling, delamination
Excludes Rock chip damage, improper care, insurance claims Rock chip damage, improper care, insurance claims

Both warranties cover the failure modes of the film itself — yellowing from UV, cracking from temperature swings, peeling at the edges, bubbling, and delamination. Neither covers physical damage like rock chips, which is the whole point of the film. The film absorbs impacts and replaces itself; the warranty is about the film not failing prematurely while doing its job.

Price

Pricing is broadly similar:

  • Full front (hood, fenders, mirrors, bumper): $1,200–$2,200
  • Track package (full front + rocker panels + door cups): $2,500–$3,500
  • Full body wrap: $5,500–$8,500

SunTek is sometimes ~10% cheaper in markets where the local SunTek shop is competing on price; XPEL tends to command a slight premium because of the brand recognition and DAP. Both are far more expensive than budget films, and worth every dollar over them.

When to choose which

Choose XPEL if:

  • You drive a recent or exotic vehicle and want the most comprehensive plotter coverage.
  • You're in a market with strong XPEL dealer presence (most of the US).
  • You want the most recognized PPF brand for resale and warranty support.

Choose SunTek if:

  • The 12-year warranty matters to you (long-term ownership).
  • Your preferred local installer is a SunTek shop.
  • You want the Eastman corporate backing and chemistry pedigree.

Both brands will give you a film that looks great, lasts a decade or more, and shrugs off rock chips. The single biggest predictor of how well your PPF wears is the installer's prep, plotter setup, and squeegee technique — pick a shop with great reviews and a portfolio of similar cars before you pick a brand.
