Quick verdict

XPEL and STEK both make premium TPU paint protection film, but they appeal to different buyers. XPEL is the safe, dominant pick — biggest dealer network, best plotter library, strongest brand recognition, and excellent baseline performance. STEK is the boutique pick — built-in hydrophobic topcoat that behaves like a ceramic coating without a second product, and the deepest color PPF range on the market for buyers who want to change their car's color without paint.

Technology

Both XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS and STEK DYNOshield are TPU films with self-healing topcoats and acrylic adhesive layers. The headline difference is what STEK calls its DYNOshield topcoat: a built-in hydrophobic layer that gives the film a slick, water-beading surface from day one. XPEL film by itself is not hydrophobic — water sheets off rather than beads, and the film looks "wet" after a wash. To get true hydrophobic behavior, XPEL recommends layering its FUSION PLUS ceramic coating on top of the film, which adds cost and an extra application step.

In practice, the DYNOshield topcoat gives STEK a real-world look and feel advantage that lasts the life of the film. XPEL with FUSION PLUS gets you to the same place but at higher cost and with a layer that needs to be reapplied every 2–4 years.

Color PPF

If you want to change your car's color without paint, STEK has the deepest color range in the industry. DYNOcolor is available in dozens of solid satins, glosses, and metallics — and because it's a paint protection film underneath the color, your factory paint stays intact. Peel the film off in 5–7 years and the original paint is still there.

XPEL's STEALTH film is a single satin/matte finish only. It transforms a glossy car into a satin one, and that's it. There's no equivalent to STEK's wider color palette in the XPEL catalog.

For straight color changes, STEK is the answer. For straight clear protection, both brands deliver.

Dealer programs

XPEL operates a single-tier Authorized Dealer program in most markets — every dealer has access to the same DAP files, training, and warranty backing. There's no hierarchy.

STEK runs a two-tier program: standard Authorized Dealer and Black Label Dealer. Black Label shops have additional training, inventory requirements, and access to STEK's more exclusive products (including DYNOcolor for advanced wraps). Black Label is the closest analog to XPEL's "approved at the highest level" tier.

Warranty

Both ULTIMATE PLUS and DYNOshield carry 10-year manufacturer warranties against yellowing, peeling, cracking, bubbling, and delamination. Both are transferable once with the original paperwork. Both exclude rock chip damage (which is the purpose of the film) and improper maintenance.

Price

Expect to pay 5–10% more for a STEK install than the equivalent XPEL job in the same market. The premium is partly the cost of the DYNOshield topcoat, partly the smaller dealer network. For DYNOcolor, the premium is much larger — color PPF is significantly more expensive than a clear protection film install.

When to choose which

Choose XPEL if:

  • You want the safest, most widely-available option.
  • You're fine layering a separate ceramic coating on top for hydrophobicity.
  • DAP plotter coverage matters for your vehicle (recent models, exotics).
  • You're looking purely for clear protection, not a color change.

Choose STEK if:

  • You want hydrophobic behavior built into the film (no extra ceramic step).
  • You want a color PPF wrap (DYNOcolor) to change the car's look without paint.
  • There's a STEK Black Label dealer in your area whose work you trust.
  • You're drawn to a more boutique brand experience.

As always, the installer matters more than the brand. A great XPEL shop will give you a better result than an average STEK shop, and vice versa. Pick the brand whose local dealer has the strongest portfolio for cars like yours.
