Quick verdict
GSWF and XPEL both make modern TPU paint protection film, but they win in different categories. XPEL dominates the clear PPF market in North America with ULTIMATE PLUS, the most widely-installed clear film in the industry, backed by proprietary DAP cutting software and the largest Authorized Dealer network. GSWF is the leader in factory-infused color PPF — its Infused Color line covers 48+ colors across nine collections that you cannot get from XPEL at all. For pure clear protection, XPEL is the safer choice. For a color change with full PPF protection, GSWF is essentially the only serious option.
Technology
XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS is a self-healing TPU film with an acrylic adhesive, paired with the Design Access Program (DAP) — XPEL's proprietary library of pre-cut templates that lets every Authorized Dealer plot panels without hand-trimming on the paint. The film is clear, optically transparent, and not hydrophobic by default; XPEL recommends layering FUSION PLUS ceramic coating on top to get water-beading behavior.
GSWF Defender is a four-layer TPU construction: self-healing topcoat, ultra-thick base film, high-tack adhesive, and advanced liner. The lineup includes Defender Platinum (15-year warranty, "up to 45% more gloss"), Defender Ultra (10-year, easier installation with mid-tack adhesive), Defender Max (10-mil extra-thick for maximum impact resistance), Defender Hydro (enhanced hydrophobics), and Defender Satin/Matte finishes. GSWF also offers IMPACVUE windshield protection film and Night Shade window tint — categories XPEL competes in separately through PRIME XR PLUS and Authorized Dealer-installed PRIME films.
Color PPF
This is where the two brands diverge sharply. GSWF Infused Color PPF is the deepest color lineup in the PPF category — 48+ factory-infused colors organized into nine collections: Drip, Primary, Retroverse, Rouge, Tropic, Pacific, Nightfall, Aurora, Alloy, and Shades of Grey. Finishes include solid gloss, satin, matte, metallic, and pearlescent. Pricing starts around $396 for a partial roll and runs up to $1,780 for premium colors. Every color sheet is full PPF underneath — so the film protects the original paint while completely changing the look.
XPEL does not compete here. The closest XPEL product is STEALTH, a single satin-matte finish PPF that turns a glossy car into a satin one. There are no XPEL color options beyond that. For a true color change with PPF underneath, you either pick GSWF (or STEK DYNOcolor) — XPEL has no entry in this segment.
Dealer programs
XPEL runs a single-tier Authorized Dealer program — every dealer has equal access to DAP files, training, and warranty backing. There's no hierarchy. The network is the largest in North America.
GSWF also operates a single-tier certified installer program with manufacturer training and warranty support. The US footprint is smaller than XPEL's and skews toward installers who want the color PPF category as a differentiator. Outside major metros, GSWF coverage is thinner than XPEL's.
Warranty
XPEL ULTIMATE PLUS carries a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, peeling, bubbling, and delamination. The warranty is transferable to a second owner and covers both the film and the labor to remove and replace it.
GSWF Defender Platinum carries a 15-year warranty — five years longer than XPEL on the flagship clear film, per the shop.gswf.com product card ("Backed by a 15 year warranty for ultimate peace of mind"). The rest of the Defender clear PPF lineup (Ultra, Hydro, Max, Satin, Matte, 72") is covered at least 8 years per GSWF's own clear-PPF page. Infused Color PPF carries up to a 10-year warranty per GSWF's color-PPF page. GSWF warranty registration is administered through warranty.gswf.com; transferability is not advertised — confirm with your certified installer before relying on the warranty for resale.
Price
For full-front clear PPF coverage (hood, fenders, front bumper, side mirrors, headlights), expect $1,500–$2,800 from an XPEL Authorized Dealer depending on vehicle size and market. Full-vehicle clear coverage runs $5,000–$9,000+.
GSWF Defender pricing on shop.gswf.com starts at $511 for a Defender Ultra roll and $574 for Defender Platinum, with Defender Max running $1,430 and the wider 72" Defender at $1,467. Installed pricing tracks XPEL closely on clear PPF — sometimes a touch lower because the brand is fighting for market share. Infused Color PPF starts around $396 for entry colors and runs up to $1,780 for premium metallics and pearlescents — a full color change install will be meaningfully more than a clear PPF job because of the additional film cost and the labor to install a full body of colored film.
When to choose which
Choose XPEL if:
- You want the most widely-available, proven clear PPF.
- DAP plotter coverage matters for your vehicle (recent models, exotics).
- You value a transferable warranty for resale.
- You're getting clear protection only — no color change.
Choose GSWF if:
- You want a color change with full PPF protection underneath.
- You want the deepest color PPF lineup in the category (48+ options).
- Defender Platinum's 15-year warranty appeals to you over ULTIMATE PLUS's 10.
- You're packaging PPF with GSWF's IMPACVUE windshield film or Night Shade tint.
As with any PPF, the installer matters more than the brand. A great GSWF certified installer will beat an average XPEL Authorized Dealer, and vice versa. For most buyers in 2026, the decision comes down to whether you want clear (XPEL) or color (GSWF).
