Weekly: Contactless Rinse
If you are not doing a full wash this week, a quick contactless rinse with plain water keeps light surface dust and pollen from accumulating. No soap, no mitt — just water.
A coated surface will sheet water off cleanly. If you notice the water stops sheeting and starts beading and clinging, your coating is due for a maintenance wash and possibly a booster.
Every 2 Weeks: Two-Bucket Wash
A proper two-bucket hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo every 2 weeks is the foundation of coating maintenance. See our wash guide for the full process.
After each wash, dry with an air blower or clean microfiber towel and inspect the paint quickly for any new chips, scratches or PPF edge issues.
Every 3-6 Months: Ceramic Booster
Ceramic boosters (also called toppers, refreshers or maintenance sprays) restore the hydrophobic effect of your coating between full reapplications. They sit on top of the underlying coating and replenish the SiO₂ surface layer.
Recommended boosters:
- CarPro Reload
- Gyeon Cure / Q²M Cure
- Gtechniq C2v3
- XPEL Ceramic Boost
- Adam's Ceramic Boost
Apply after a proper wash on a clean dry panel. Spray on, wipe in with a clean microfiber, and buff to a dry shine with a second clean microfiber. Most boosters take 5-10 minutes per panel.
Annually: Professional Inspection & Decontamination
Once a year, take the car to your installer (or a reputable detailer) for a full inspection and decontamination wash. They will:
- Use an iron remover to dissolve embedded brake dust and rail dust.
- Clay bar the surface to remove bonded contaminants the soap cannot lift.
- Inspect the coating with a high-intensity light for any thin spots or failure.
- Top up with a fresh layer of coating or booster as needed.
For PPF, the inspection also covers edge lifting, yellowing, and any chip damage on the film itself. A professional can use a heat gun to flatten settled wrinkles or address minor surface scratches.
PPF-Specific Maintenance
PPF needs slightly different attention than ceramic coating. Things to watch for:
- Edge lifting around bumpers, door handles, hood and fender edges. A small amount of edge lift is normal in the first few months and will self-set. Persistent or worsening lift requires installer attention.
- Yellowing — modern premium PPF brands (XPEL, STEK, SunTek Reaction) have largely eliminated this, but cheaper or older films can yellow under UV. Annual inspection catches it early.
- Stubborn surface scratches on PPF can often be heated with a heat gun and "self-heal" back to flat — a feature of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) PPF. Have your installer do this.
Warranty Maintenance Requirements
Most ceramic coating brands require some form of documented annual maintenance to keep the warranty valid:
- Ceramic Pro: annual inspection at an authorized dealer.
- Gtechniq: regular professional maintenance.
- CarPro: regular pH-neutral washing and avoidance of harsh chemicals.
- XPEL: regular washing per manufacturer guidelines.
Keep a maintenance log: photos, dates, products used, who did the work. If you ever need to file a warranty claim, this documentation is what gets it approved or denied.
