Understanding Ceramic Coating & PPF Warranties

Most ceramic coating and paint protection film warranties read like insurance fine print. This guide breaks them down in plain English so you know what you’re actually getting.

What Warranties Actually Cover

Coating and PPF warranties come in two flavors: manufacturer warranties (backed by the brand that makes the product, like XPEL or Ceramic Pro) and installer warranties(backed by the shop that applied it). Manufacturer warranties survive if the shop closes; installer-only warranties don’t.

Typically covered

  • Product failure (peeling, delamination)
  • Yellowing of clear PPF
  • Cracking and bubbling
  • Loss of hydrophobic / self-healing properties
  • Removal and replacement labor

Typically NOT covered

  • Physical damage from impacts
  • Improper washing techniques
  • Automated / abrasive car washes
  • Neglected maintenance
  • Damage to underlying paint

Common Warranty Traps

The annual maintenance requirement

Many ceramic coating warranties (Ceramic Pro, System X, Feynlab, Kavaca) require an annual inspection at an Authorized Dealer. Miss one — even by a month — and the warranty is void. The inspection often costs $100–$200 and may surface "recommended" maintenance work you have to pay for.

The wrong soap voids your warranty

Coatings are sensitive to pH. Using a household degreaser, dish soap, or a "wash & wax" product with abrasives can void coverage. Some brands require you to use only their branded maintenance products (sold at a markup).

"Lifetime" doesn’t mean lifetime

"Lifetime warranty" almost always means the lifetime of the product, not your life or the life of the vehicle. Most "lifetime" coatings have a real cap of 5–10 years buried in the fine print.

Non-transferable means zero resale value

Most ceramic coating warranties die the day you sell the vehicle. XPEL’s PPF warranties are a notable exception — they transfer with the vehicle. If you’re relying on the warranty as a selling point, get the transfer terms in writing.

The original-installer-only requirement

Some warranties require you to return to the SAME installer for all maintenance, even if you move across the country. If that shop closes or changes hands, the warranty effectively dies.

Red Flags to Watch For

"Lifetime warranty" with no written terms or specific year cap
Warranty backed only by the shop, with no manufacturer involvement
"9H hardness" marketing used to imply scratch-proof — it isn’t
Warranty that requires proprietary maintenance products at high markup
Verbal-only promises with nothing in writing
Refusal to provide the warranty document before booking

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

  1. Is the warranty manufacturer-backed or shop-backed?Ideal answer: manufacturer-backed, with the manufacturer’s claim process documented in writing.
  2. What is the exact duration in years?Ideal answer: a specific number (5 years, 10 years, etc.) — not "lifetime" without a cap.
  3. What maintenance is required to keep it valid?Ideal answer: a specific schedule (annual inspection vs none), approved soaps, and a maintenance product list.
  4. Is it transferable if I sell the car?Ideal answer: a clear yes/no with the transfer process and any fees explained.
  5. Can I see a copy of the warranty document before I pay?Ideal answer: yes — handed to you on the spot, not "after the install."
